Grand cru

The highest level of the hierarchy in Burgundy and Alsace, defined appellation by appellation.

In Burgundy, the grands crus are appellations in their own right, such as Chambertin or Musigny, each with its own specification.

In Alsace, the Alsace grand cru appellation is divided into delimited lieux-dits. Elsewhere, the word may belong to classifications that fall outside the appellation system: each specification has to be read.
